Strategic Planning / Scorecarding

By starting with a company’s strategic goals, executives can align operational results with strategic objectives. A common mistake that organizations make when implementing a BI infrastructure, is that they do NOT start with their strategic goals. Without alignment, executives end up with a mix. Some performance measures will not line up with any strategic goals while some will. The outcome is that some strategic goals will not have any or very little associated performance measures. With respect to assets, the associated strategic goals will be the starting point for designing the performance measures.

Performance monitoring and measurement is central to keeping execution aligned with strategy. While words inspire, metrics communicate strategy and targets and provide the clarity people need to really drive performance. Since what gets measured gets done, it’s paramount that people are monitoring the right metrics—those that drive value, rather than monitoring lagging measures that reflect simply what’s happened. Plans and strategies should be defined and communicated as a set of interconnected performance indicators that are presented as dynamic scorecards that people can “drill into” to analyze what’s behind a result that’s not performing as it should. This will not only give each employee access to information that connects the company’s strategic priorities to his/her own, it will provide visibility into what needs to be fixed. And will foster accountability that places day-to-day activities within the right performance context.
