As part of the whole-product approach of a PM system, Performance Management Solutions includes Industry Solutions and Enterprise Performance Solutions. They feature the necessary interplay of information and answers to the three fundamental PM questions: How are we doing? Why? and What should we be doing?
Industry Solutions
Each industry has a number of specific challenges that are "sweet spots" for corporate performance management, often specific to a particular department. Some of these include:
- Pharmaceutical/health sciences: Clinical Performance Measurement, Enterprise incentive compensation management, and Product demand forecasting
- Financial services: Mortgage banking, Insurance risks claims reporting, Basel II and risk reporting
- Manufacturing: Supply chain planning, Manufacturing performance management, Aerospace and defense management scorecarding and dashboarding
- Retail: Retail operational performance management, Vendor performance management
- Public Sector: TANF Public Health and Welfare, Police and Corrections Performance Management, K-12 and No Child Left Behind Act compliance
Enterprise Performance Solutions
Enterprise performance solutions are more general to many companies and industries rather than specific to one. They may also have a department focus. They include:
- Enterprise Planning Solutions: Cognos has developed a number of "blue prints" that show how planning, and now scorecards and reports can influence and improve key areas of your business. Blue prints include: Risk analysis, Sales planning and forecasting, and Headcount and compensation planning
- Enterprise Performance Applications: Cognos has developed out-of-the-box reports, metrics, analytics, and will be adding plans and financial models for key operational areas of every business. These include Finance, Operations, Customers, and Workforce.
- Scorecarding: Cognos business intelligence technology is built to support scorecarding methodologies, such as the Balanced Scorecard. Scorecarding becomes a true PM solution when it embraces such approaches that require interplay among technologies, such as planning and reporting.
- Financial Consolidation: Consolidation, as an enterprise solution, adds pre-built rules, calculations, and the ability to populate plans or scorecards. A consolidation solution can adapt to serve the needs of a multinational operating in several countries.
- Reporting, analysis, and data solutions: Reporting solutions benefit from pre-built connections to the underlying data sources. Mapping report elements to common data sources (such as ERP data warehouses) provides a headstart to integrated PM.
